It&#8217;s a fact of life! \u00a0But what does that mean and how should it affect what we do? \u00a0Not everyone is going to be extremely active as they get older but there are benefits to any activity and you would be surprised at what can be accomplished both in terms of health benefits and personal goals. \u00a0For example, there is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linsladephysiotherapy.co.uk\/physio4u\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/rpsm.2011.09.1933_secure.pdf\">great article<\/a> in the Physician and Sportsmedicine that looks specifically at differences in muscle in a 40 year old tri-athlete, a 74 year old sedentary person and a 74 year old tri-athlete. \u00a0The differences are obvious to anyone who looks! The second article has imaging pictures of each individual&#8217;s legs.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically you can see in the triathlon article that the 40 year old and the 74 \u00a0year old competitors have similar muscle mass.<\/p>\n 40 year old tri-athlete\n 74 year old sedentary man\n 74 year old tri-athlete\n<p>Another good example is a man by the name of Joe Stockinger who, weighing 74 kg and being 82 years old , was lifting a combined total of over a thousand pounds (454 kg) for the 3 lifts in his powerlifting competition.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oE2BX0ghres?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are many more examples of individuals who have continued to participate well past the time that many would have had them retire. \u00a0All of us can benefit from their examples.. that famous old saying is still true today &#8221;If you don&#8217;t use it, you&#8217;ll lose it!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You don&#8217;t have to be a high level competitor to receive the benefits of exercise which can include \u00a0fat loss, improved \u00a0muscle tone, better cardio-vascular health, improved bone density and just being able to comfortably enjoy your life!! \u00a0Find something that you can love to do whether it be dancing, running, swimming, drumming or any other type of activity that feels good to you! \u00a0If you are concerned then get a physiotherapist or your medical doctor to check you over to make sure that you feel safe in increasing your activity level. \u00a0Sometimes this can provide the peace of mind you need to feel confident in getting on with being you!<\/p>\n<p>See you on the pitch!! ;&#8217; \u00a0)<\/p>\n<p>Ross<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Age is no limit!
